Stitched in Red

One crochet string, one felt pumpkin, one honey-blonde bob — and the coziest haunted bedroom in the Cat House. Eva Purr is this October’s reason to swipe up.

Lamplight, paper ghosts, and a look over the shoulder that says she heard you coming.

Some women dress up for Halloween. Eva Purr dresses down for it — and somehow ends up more in costume than anyone at the party. Her October look has exactly three ingredients: a hand-crocheted red string bikini, a fuzzy felt jack-o’-lantern perched on a headband, and a wavy honey-blonde bob with blunt baby bangs. That’s it. No cape, no fangs, no rented witch hat. The pumpkin does the talking, the red does the flirting, and the bob does the rest.

What makes the set sing, though, is the room. This isn’t a cold studio with a seamless backdrop. It’s a bedroom you’d actually want to wake up in — pale wood bed, ivy trailing along the headboard, two soft-toned prints of cherry blossom and lotus pinned above it, and a little army of paper ghosts drifting off the walls. A “Happy Halloween” garland in orange, black and white hangs across the corner, a beaded bedside lamp throws honey-gold light, and a monstera keeps watch by the mirror. Then, right in the middle of the floor, the star prop: a cream knit throw with long tassel fringe, puddled on the wood like it was dropped there on purpose.

Fashion editors will tell you red and orange fight. Eva didn’t get the memo, and thank goodness. The crochet bikini is a true cherry red, open-stitched and tied at the hips in loose little bows, while the felt pumpkin sits a few shades warmer. Together they read like a candle flame — hot at the center, glowing at the edges. A barely-there gold body chain catches the lamplight at her waist, and two delicate gold bracelets keep things soft.

The makeup deserves its own costume credit. Up close, Eva’s eyes are washed in coral and pumpkin, with a champagne glitter lid that winks every time she blinks — literally the jack-o’-lantern’s candle, painted on. Her cheeks carry a sun-kissed peach flush, and the lip is a glossy berry-rose that she pouts straight into the lens in one frame like she’s blowing out the candle herself.

🎃 Why a pumpkin, anyway?

Eva’s headband owes its whole existence to a turnip. The jack-o’-lantern traces back to Ireland’s Samhain, the old festival marking summer’s end, when carved turnips — known in Irish as Seán na Gealaí — were lit and set on doorsteps to scare off wandering spirits.1 The name comes from the folktale of Stingy Jack, a blacksmith who tricked the Devil, was turned away from both heaven and hell, and was left to roam with a single coal glowing inside a hollowed turnip.2 Pumpkins aren’t native to Ireland; they only took over the job later because they’re bigger and far kinder to the carver.2 Eva’s version, happily, is felt — no knife required.

So here’s the plan for your October: pour something warm, dim the lights to lamp-gold, and let Eva Purr show you how a single red thread and a felt pumpkin can out-costume an entire party. The ghosts on her wall have already seen the whole set. Your turn — and it’s on the house until the last jack-o’-lantern goes dark.
